How was your weekend? I watched the film "Control".
As you know, I like watching films better than reading books. ^^

My favorite film is OUT OF AFRICA. It is based on the memoirs of Danish writer Karen Blixen (pen name, Isak Dinesen) that is set in a coffee plantation in Kenya. It explains how this brave woman overcomes the sterotype of a dainty, colonial British lady by running the coffee farm while her husband Bror Blixen (Brandauer) leads a life of hunting and having an affair. Meryl Streep is great as Karen Blixen. She manages to maintain the realistic Danish accent through the whole film. Robert Redford is great as Denys Finch-Hatton, the Etonian hunter who keeps her companion in her loneliest and hardest moments. But the real attraction of the film is the outstanding photography of the African landscape together with the sweeping John Barry soundtrack that is probably the most beautiful movie soundtrack of the 1980s. OUT OF AFRICA will be regarded as Sydney Pollack's best film a Classic of our times. This film won seven Academy Awards including Best Directing. Unfortunately, he died at his home in May, 2008.

I like the scene when Denys went on a flight with Karen on the sky of Africa where there were overspread with a flock of flamingoes. If you have a chance to rent to this film, you would be like this film.

토요일 치과진료차 방문한 친구네 병원에는 꽤나 많은 신문이 쌓여 있었다.
진료 전의 긴장을 풀고자 이리저리 들추던 신문에는
순천만에 찾아든 철새들의 소식이 사진과 함께 실려 있었다.
딱 이맘 때, 찬바람과 함께 짧아진 하루해와 함께 생각나는 곳 중 하나가 되어버린 순천만.
이제 그곳과 함께할 시간이 불과 열흘 남짓 밖에 남지 않았다.

위 사진을 처음 만난 순간부터 기회가 될 때마다 난 그자리에 앉으려고 하였다.
시간이 흘러 새로운 사진이 벽에 걸리자,
이 사진도 자신의 자리를 내어준 채 구석진 자리로 옮겨지게 되었다.
종종 이 사진이 걸린 구석진 자리에서 기다릴때면,
오래전 마음 속 풍경과 마주한 기분으로 설레이기도 하였다.

언젠가 이 사진 속 풍경을 맞이하러 순천만을 찾아갔건만,
처음엔 시간이 모자라 찾아가던 발길을 돌려야했고,
두번째에는 겨우 찾아가서 S자 물길만 어둠 속에서 간신히 확인할 수 있었다.
마지막에는 함께하던 이들의 흥이 부쳐 찾아가던 발길마저 먼 발치서 돌려야 했다.
그런데도 언제나 순천만에 대한 첫 이미지는 위 사진 속 모습이다.

사람은 늘 무의식적으로 자기 마음을 통해서 풍경을 바라본다.
오로라의 신비한 빛이 들려주는 무언가는,
그것을 바라보는 사람의 마음 속 풍경에 벌써부터 있었던 것이리라.

호시노 미치오의 말처럼... 이미 내 마음 속에 있었던 순천만 풍경은
내가 가보지 않아도 사진 속 풍경과 같았을 것이다.
물론 한번 뿐이긴 하나, 가서 보았던들 달라질 것이 없더라는...

거리상으로도, 다시 찾아간들 실재 마주할 리 만무한 풍경이
이젠 눈 앞에서마저 사라질거란 생각으로 아쉬움만 커져간다.
